Britomartis Devised Theatre Ensemble presents harlot/nun

This is an original theatrical work that traces the archetypes of the goddesses Artemis and Aphrodite through history and literature. The piece was created using texts ranging from “The Illiad” and the “Homeric Hymns”, to “Twelfth Night” and “The Faerie Queene”, to the Poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay, to “Lord of the Rings,” and “Sex and the City.”

Join us as we attempt to deconstruct the Madonna/Whorelit dichotomy and to explore what it means to be a woman, what it means to be a rebel, what it means to tell a story, and what it means to love. “After all is said and all is done, what should I be but a harlot and a nun?”

The show is based on over 200 interviews with women of all ages, sexual orientations, races, and classes about their relationships with their bodies and their sexual histories. “She Loves Me is the story of two clerks, Georg Nowack and Amalia Balash, who work in a parfumerie in Europe in 1934. They can’t stand one another and constantly bicker. Little do they know that they’ve fallen in love with each other anonymous letters written only to a “dear friend.” When Georg discovers that “dear friend” is really Amalia, he decides to make her fall in love with him before revealing his true identity to her. Funny, intelligent, honest and sentimental, She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance and nostalgia, yet as universal and relevant as ever in this age of internet romances.”

“Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds just home after their six-day honeymoon. They’re epitome of ‘opposites attract’: He’s a straight-laced lawyer and she’s a spontaneous free spirit. Together, they navigate married life in their new fifth floor apartment that’s laughably small. Then, add into the mix a lack of heat, a leaky skylight, several flights of stairs, Corie’s loopy but well-meaning mother and an oddball neighbor upstairs. Neil Simon’s classic comedy is an ode to young love and commitment filled with laughs and charming characters who find joy amid inspired lunacy.”
